This is the story of a brave young boy named Maki who manages to escape from slave traders. He meets Zarafa, a baby giraffe and together they travel across the fiercely hot North African desert with a kindly Bedouin called Hassan. When the three finally arrive at the city of Alexandria, they find that the ancient city is under siege from Turkish invaders. A magic air balloon then flies them to Paris where they present Zarafa to the King, in the hope that he will send his army to save their city.
