Better known in the West for his frequent collaborations with Johnnie To (Mad Detective, Fulltime Killer), here filmmaker Wai Ka-fai slips into a deeply metaphysical groove, crafting a fascinating and soulful exploration of love and loss. Twelve-year old Melody (Mia Yam) lost her father Tony (Mad Detective star Lau Ching-Wan) in a devastating car crash a decade ago. The tragic accident stole her eyesight and left her mother Mandy (Kelly Lin) an empty shell. In an attempt to rouse her mother from perpetual ennui, Melody begins to pen a novel mapping out an alternate reality, one where Tony is the only survivor of the crash. Before long, a series of increasingly fantastical alternate realities compete for prominence as our characters struggle to articulate their inconsolable grief through the catharsis of prose. This affecting melodrama features yet another virtuoso turn by Lau Ching-Wan, undoubtedly one of the finest actors in Hong Kong cinema today.
