Despite having John Travolta and Denzel Washington in the leading roles, the 2009 remake of the subway hijack drama hadn’t a patch on this, the 1974 original, starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. New York’s police department and transport systems are seen in all their gritty and pressurised glory as the police try to buy time with the colour-codenamed gangsters who are holding the subway train and passengers to ransom. How can they possibly escape?
