WILD STRAWBERRIES: MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE

Director: Jean Becker

82 minutes| France| 2010| Subtitled

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

This month’s title is an affectionate gem starring the much-loved French actor Gerard Depardieu. Frequently accused of over-playing his characters, in this gentle drama he takes the opposite approach, quietly winning the friendship of Margueritte, an older woman whom he meets in the local park. Germain (Depardieu) is a colossus of a man, ambling through life taking care of his screeching, ungrateful mother while enjoying the love of Annette. His friends quietly laugh at him and he is conscious of his limitations, particularly his inability to read, until he meets Margueritte reading in the park and they become friends over feeding the pigeons. Margueritte sees Germain’s goodness and helps him to read while his attentions to her give her a reason to go to the park each day.
