Combine the memoir of highly-regarded and ironic journalist Lynn Barber, the adaptation skills and wit of novelist Nick Hornby (About a Boy, High Fidelity) and the light touch of director Lone Scherfig and you get this award-winning film.
An Education is that rare thing – a coming-of-age story that combines charm, period detail, wit, warmth and genuine affection for its teenage heroine, growing up in ‘swinging’ London. Newcomer Carey Mulligan is luminous in the role as Jenny, a 16-year-old Londoner who has her eye on the bigger world beyond school and her loving but naive parents. Into her life comes smooth-talking, fast-car-driving, 30-year-old David, who seduces her with talk of parties, and charms her parents until the truth of his situation forces them all to face the harsh realities of her growing up.
