WILD STRAWBERRIES: A BUNCH OF AMATEURS

Director: Andy Cadiff

96 minutes| U.K.| 2008| Comedy

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

Aiming to bring you a wide range of films throughout the year, our title for this month is a very amusing take on the world of English amateur dramatics. Burt Reynolds is Jefferson Steel, a faded Hollywood star who is conned into playing King Lear in a production for charity. Turns out, though, it’s not in Stratford-upon-Avon but rather, Stratford in Surrey, where they are hoping that the star’s attachment will attract enough media attention to prevent the closure of their company. Needless to say, despite Steel’s fall from fame, he continues to act like a superstar and demands to be treated as one. Local B&B owner, Mary (Imelda Staunton), falls for Steel while Derek Jacobi as local thespian Nigel seethes as his own ambitions are thwarted by the new arrival. Fun and charming moments abound in this gentle comedy co-written by Private Eye’s Ian Hislop.

€4 including regular tea/coffee.
