Irish Film Institute -What Richard Did

What Richard Did

Director: Lenny Abrahamson

The third feature from Lenny Abrahamson is an extraordinary portrait of a golden-boy gone awry. What Richard Did sees the seemingly perfect life of Dublin teenager Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor) collapse around him when he makes a terrible mistake. Intelligent, athletic, and respected by young and old alike, Richard leads his affluent Dublin friends in drinking and socialising their way through a carefree summer. Striking up a relationship with local girl Lara (Roisin Murphy) Richard alienates teammate and Lara’s ex-boyfriend Conor (Sam Keeley), beginning a dispute between the two boys that escalates into changing the lives of himself and his friends. Having explored Ireland’s social misfits and outsiders in his previous work, Abrahamson here trains his meditative lens on Dublin’s elite and explores the consequences of misadventure in that world.
