TORI AND LOKITA

Director: Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne

88 mins, France-Belgium, 2022, Digital, Subtitled

Siblings Tori and Lokita (Pablo Schils and Joely Mbundu) have travelled from Africa, and are housed in a centre for immigrant children in Belgium. Their current situation, however, is scarcely better than it was back home, where Tori, accused of being a sorcerer, faced death threats. In dire financial straits, they sell drugs for restauranteur and petty crook Betim to pay off a debt to the African smuggler who brought them to Europe. Somehow Lokita must send money back home to her mother, too. Events spiral out of control when Lokita, increasingly desperate, agrees to three months’ live-in work for Betim tending a cannabis farm, separating her from her brother.

Urgent, propulsive, and dynamic, Tori and Lokita simmers with a quiet rage at the plight of its titular pair, representative figures for all Europe’s at-risk migrants.

There will be Open Captioned screenings at 18.30 on Monday 5th and 13.00 on Thursday 8th.
