Director: CHRIS ROCK

102 minutes, U.S.A., 2014, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released on Friday 8th May 2015 and is no longer screening.

Channelling Woody Allen and Richard Linklater, Chris Rock’s latest film is ferociously funny and intelligent. It follows Andre Allen (Rock), the biggest comedian in America, on the opening day of his new film, Uprize!, the story of a Haitian slave rebellion that marks his attempt to break into serious roles. While undertaking promotional duties, he must also contend with the demands of his bride-to-be, reality star Erica (Gabrielle Union).

He reluctantly agrees to allow Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson), a journalist from The New York Times, a publication with a history of savaging his work, to accompany him in preparation for a major profile piece. The two agree to be rigorously honest with each other, regardless of the consequences of their revelations. There is an easy and credible chemistry between the two leads in this fresh, insightful, and genuinely hilarious film. (Notes by Kevin Coyne)
