Tomboy

Director: Céline Sciamma

France • Drama • 2011 • 84 Mins • English Subtitles

When ten-year-old Laure and her family move house, Laure decides to rename herself Michael. Her new neighbours believe she is a boy, but will she be able to keep up the pretence? This is a complex coming-of-age story about feeling like an outsider and trying to fit in. It explores the period between childhood and adolescence, and takes a tender and intelligent look at questions of gender identity from a child’s perspective. A brilliant performance from Zoé Héran as the confused but determined young girl. (Age recommendation: 15+)
