Across a number of shorts and previous feature Amer, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani have revitalised the Italian giallo genre of the 1960s and ‘70s with their heady mix of beautiful yet disturbing images, oblique narrative, detailed sound design, and soundtracks of carefully chosen pre-existing pieces by composers including Ennio Morricone.

With The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears, these characteristics combine to bring the filmmakers’ work to a new level, creating an immersive sensory experience tinged with psychedelia and surrealism that is utterly unlike anything encountered in mainstream cinema. The basics of the plot concern a man who arrives home to find his apartment locked from the inside and his wife vanished. As he investigates, he finds that hers is not the building’s first disappearance, the premise on which the directors build their startling and intriguing film.

Don’t forget we now schedule weekly.
