The Story of the Weeping Camel

Director: Byambasuren Davaa & Luigi Falorni

Germany/Mongolia ? 2003 ? Drama/Documentary ? English subtitles ? 90 mins

This fascinating and moving drama takes place in the far off desert lands of Mongolia, where camels and families of nomadic shepherds live alongside. When one of the camels rejects her newborn colt, the nomads send their two young boys out across the desert in search of a musician who will help. It is hard to imagine how a film with little dialogue, and whose main characters are camels, could be so engaging. However, we watch the camels interact with one another and the shepherds, their hugely expressive faces revealing their emotions. The gorgeous cinematography helps to make the film feel like a documentary of everyday life as well as a story about the relationship between humans and nature.
