THE RULES OF THE GAME

Director: JEAN RENOIR

FRANCE • 1939 • SUBTITLED • BLACK AND WHITE • 110 MIN.

Renoir’s masterpiece? The public at the time didn’t think so much of this complex, sophisticated spin on a country-house farce, in which the desperation of lovers moves from comedy to tragedy, and Renoir mercilessly exposes the refusal of a decadent aristocracy to recognise the impending collapse of Europe. The rabbit-hunting scene and the climactic fancy dress party still have the power to shock and surprise.
