The people of Iran expected change to come from the 2009 Presidential elections; reformist candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi seemed certain to wrest the position from incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, ushering in a new era of personal freedom and social justice. Before the election, Mousavi’s supporters identified themselves by wearing green; following the announcement of the results, the colour became a symbol of defiance and hope. Ahmadinejad was declared winner amid reports of blatant manipulation of the ballot box, a result supported by the country’s spiritual leader. When Mousavi’s supporters took to the streets in peaceful protest, government forces responded with horrific, indiscriminate violence. This excellent documentary not only uses the usual interviews and contemporary footage to recount this story, but also, unusually, blogs and tweets from the time set to striking animation. A powerful and moving film. (Notes by Kevin Coyne).
