For fans of Wallander, this shockingly gruesome crime thriller plays like an epic episode of the original Swedish TV series pumped up on steroids.

A surprisingly faithful adaptation of the first book in Stieg Larsson’s phenomenally successful Millennium crime novel trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo teams disgraced political journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) with fierce, anti-social Goth girl Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace). Mikael’s dogged researching skills and Lisbeth’s astonishing facility for computer hacking combine to great effect as the mismatched pair investigates the mysterious disappearance, forty years before, of an ageing industrialist’s beloved great-niece. Dark familial secrets, sadistic violence and surprising deceptions crawl out of the dark Scandinavian woodwork, like woodworms gnawing away at your soul. A little too plot-heavy, perhaps, but director Niels Arden Oplev’s skilful use of photographic and computer imagery lends the complex details a very modern look and feel. Intelligent, disturbing and compelling in equal measure.
