EXCLUSIVELY AT IFI
After her captivating debut You, Me and Everyone We Know, performance artist and filmmaker Miranda July continues to surprise with this daffy yet penetrating look at modern relationships. Don’t expect anything like a conventional drama however, for what fascinates July is finding new ways of getting under the audience’s skin, some of them decidedly unusual, like having the movie narrated by a melancholy cat named Paw Paw, who’s waiting for July and her partner Hamish Linklater to pick her up for adoption. Actually, the said moggy is key to the story, since the prospect of having to be responsible for the animal prompts the couple to take a month out of their lives to follow their dreams . . . only to discover how hard it is to be happy in an age of uncertainty.

Whimsical diversions and genuine anxiety make for a provocative combination in a film where the laughter is tinged by seriousness and all-too-human fears framed by wry wit. (Notes by Trevor Johnston.)
