The Event

Director Thom Fitzgerald (The Hanging Garden, Beefcake) returns to the festival with a powerful and challenging drama which raises the issue of whether or not we have the right to choose how we die. When his HIV medication is no longer working, Matt (Don McKeller) decides to throw one last party for his friends and family, during which he will take his own life. Matt’s mother (Olympia Dukakis in a standout performance) rises to the challenge Matt’s decision creates and it is through her relations with her son that the complex issues are explicated. The story is told in flashback, as District Attorney Nick (Parker Posey), who has her own agenda here, investigates Matt’s death. A gripping drama and a three-hankie weepie, The Event opened this year’s London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, and has played to standing ovations all over the world.
