Dario Argento’s latest giallo entry is full of treasures and delights. It begins as a police procedural as a sick psychopath challenges Roman policewoman Anna (Mia Bendetta) to games of Internet poker where the stakes are the lives of women he has abducted. The Card Player works well as a thriller but is distinguished by the director’s trademark set-pieces. Local audiences will also enjoy Liam Cunningham as a foulmouthed, alcoholic Irish policeman who is brought in to work on the case.
