This film screened 30th July 2016.
An opening preamble tells us that the footage we are about to watch was recovered from the recording equipment of three students who went missing in Burkittsville, Maryland in 1994 while shooting a documentary based on a local folk legend known as the Blair Witch. Save for their camera, no trace of the amateur filmmakers was ever found. Although strictly speaking not the first found-footage horror lm, the cinematic brio and phenomenal commercial success of The Blair Witch Project popularised the sub-genre, harnessing the viral potential of the Internet as no other lm had at that point, leading viewers to genuinely question the provenance of the footage.
Screening as part of Haunted Landscapes, A Season of Folk Horror. July 16th-30th.
