THE BLACK BALLOON

Director: ELISSA DOWNE

AUSTRALIA / 2008 / 97 MIN / IN ENGLISH

Inspired by writer/director Elissa Downe’s own experiences growing up, this is a warm, truthful and occasionally very funny depiction of the challenges of living in a family with autism. Thomas is about to turn 16. He’s just moved to a new home and started a new school and all he wants is to fit in. When his pregnant mother has to take things easy, his father Simon puts him in charge of his autistic older brother Charlie who also suffers from ADS. Things are tough at school, especially in the cruel world of swim practise, but at least his brother – who goes to a school for kids with special needs – can remain a secret. When his beautiful classmate Jackie accidentally meets Charlie, Thomas is forced to come to terms with his ambivalent feelings about his family.
