THE BIGGER PICTURE: HEAT

Director: Michael Mann

‘Don’t let yourself get attached to anything that you can’t walk away from in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.’

Where heat could be the crime in hand or troubles in personal relationships, director Michael Mann creates a gripping action thriller milieu led by Al Pacino as the world-weary LA detective, Hanna, on the trail of slick career criminal McAuley (Robert deNiro). Over the tense almost three hour duration, the pair jostle and chase, surrounded by an excellent cast of fellow criminals and long suffering wives, including Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd. Far from generic monosyllabic cop and robber, Mann’s rich script allows their characters expand, allowing us a detailed insight into their respective worlds, their inner workings and domestic spaces. Pacino and De Niro are enthralling as they circle each other, jaded, complex and poetic, locked in their respective roles in this atmospheric and stylish classic.

The screening will be introduced by comedian, TV presenter, and actor Kevin McGahern.
