TALKS BY HELEN McCARTHY

Helen McCarthy will give two talks over the JAPANESE ANIME WEEKEND.

A Brief History of Post-War Japanese Animation Saturday March 28, 3.00pm FREE admission
After the war, major Japanese studio Toei began making lavish, feature-length animation, and trained many of the great names in modern anime, including Hayao Miyazaki. It took a daring young innovator to bring anime to the TV screen. Osamu Tezuka, the postwar Boy Wonder of manga, set the parameters that have defined the industry since the 1960s. But is the advent of computer animation changing things?
Japanese Animation for Adults Sunday, March 29, 3.45pm FREE admission
Adult animation means different things to different people, especially when it’s from Japan. To some it’s short arthouse films, to others it means melodramatic fantasies with big-breasted girls and tentacled aliens. The best of Japanese adult animation includes action films, dramas and romances, made to the highest standards and tackling serious issues in inventive new ways. We’ll take a look at some of the best adult anime, and see which directors and writers are producing the most intelligent, exciting work for grown-ups.
