Ernesto (Ernesto Alterio) has spent his life seeking new ways to cheat people. After learning the survival value of lying in a religious school, he hitches up with veteran grifter Manco (Manuel Alexandra), who introduces him to elegant master swindler Federico (Federico Luppi). Federico’s old lover, Pilar (Victoria Abril), persuades him to participate in a big scam that will set the gang up financially for the rest of their lives. But Pilar once betrayed Federico and could prove to be his Achilles’ heel. Nobody can be trusted or is quite who they seem to be in this suitably complex crime thriller. Of the starry cast, Abril is outstanding as the sweet-faced femme fatale. The slick direction is by Miguel Bardem, from that well-known dynasty of actors, directors, composers and writers.
