SWORD OF THE STRANGER

Director: MASAHIRO ANDÔ

JAPAN • 2007 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 35MM • 103 MIN

Classic chambara (Japanese swordplay) films were made by men steeped in samurai tradition and legend. For this contemporary anime chambara, which premiered in 2007, director Masahiro Andô has also drawn from the modern Hollywood tradition of a clear narrative arc and polished presentation. He takes a man with no name, a bratty kid on the run and a dog, and merges them into a reluctant team to take on a feudal lord as well as the Chinese army.
The whole package is presented with style and panache, punctuated with violent, magnificently staged animated action scenes. The movie shines on the big screen, showing off those visceral action sequences to advantage, and has won praise at festivals across Europe and South America for its technical excellence. Whether you choose to see references to Japan’s opening up to the West and China’s growing power, or simply to enjoy its epic swordplay and action, this is pure entertainment.
