Irish Film Institute -Stevie

Stevie

Director: Steve James

U.S.A.| 2002. Colour. 140 mins.

Director Steve James’s new film takes a deeply personal turn as the filmmaker returns to the town where, ten years earlier, he served as a ‘big brother’ to a troubled young boy named Stevie. Shot over a number of years, the film provides a unique portrait of what can happen when the system fails a person. Abandoned by his mother at a young age, Stevie bounced from foster home to foster home and soon found himself in trouble with the law. James wrestles with his own conscience for having abandoned Stevie years ago when he left the area. The film leaves us with a sense of sadness and frustration, but also imparts a great understanding of one person’s responsibility for another.
