A mother and daughter challenge the antiquated patriarchal structures of a Southern Israeli Bedouin community in writer-director Elite Zexer’s compelling feature debut. As the film opens, Jalila finds herself in the strange position of hosting her husband Suliman’s marriage to his second, much younger bride, who is to be set up in a specially commissioned house next door to her own. During the ceremony she stumbles across her daughter Layla’s involvement with a boy from her university, a relationship she forbids as it could bring shame to the family, a command which incites Layla to further acts of rebellion.
