Fifteen-year-old Shola (Bukky Bakray) – or Rocks, as she’s known to her friends – lives in an East London council flat with her younger brother Emmanuel and their single mom Funke. Rocks’ world is upended when she returns from school one day to find her mother has disappeared – it’s not the first time Funke has gone missing, and Rocks is all too familiar with the bouts of depression that her loving but fragile mother suffers. But this time Funke’s disappearance feels more permanent as she has left an apologetic note and a small envelope of cash. To add to her problems, Rocks grandmother has recently returned to Nigeria, and social services have begun to investigate her case. With no adults to help her, and her boisterous brother to look after, Rocks turns to Sumaya (Kosar Ali), her closest friend, for assistance.
