PHILIPPE PARRENO: Zidane, a 21st Century Portrait

Director: Douglas Gordon & Philppe Parreno

On the occasion of IMMA’s major exhibition Philippe Parreno: November (4 November 2009 – 24 January 2010) the IFI is delighted to present two films by Philippe Parreno, followed by a discussion with the artist, led by Rachael Thomas, Head of Exhibitions at IMMA, about these films and the influence of cinema on his work as an artist.

Zidane, made in collaboration with fellow artist Douglas Gordon, creates a real-time portrait of Zinedine Zidane. Filmed during the course of a match between Real Madrid and Villareal on April 23, 2005 and using 17 cameras, all trained on the title character, the film documents literally every movement Zinedine Zidane makes, resulting in an unique and immersive portrait of an athlete in action.
