Italian horror maestro Dario Argento has made a post-modern adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, in which the original novel’s deformed composer is replaced with an abandoned orphan who is raised by sewer rats and develops a ferocious method of killing. The film has Argento’s trademark visual splendours, another fine score by Ennio Morricone, and a surprising amount of humour.
