Men of Arlington

Director: Enda Hughes

Taking its name from Arlington House, a London hostel that has housed countless Irish emigrants since its construction in 1905, Men of Arlington documents the experience of mid-twentieth century Irishmen whose emigration to London failed to provide them with a good life. Without decent employment or contacts these men found themselves alone in the world, often turning to alcohol for solace. Men of Arlington principally focuses on nine months in the lives of three of these men: Peter, Joe, and Seamus, who have each lived at Arlington for more than twenty-five years and have painful stories to tell. Describing also the efforts of the Aisling Project to restore connections between the men and their families, this documentary is at its most powerful voicing the untold stories of people like Peter, who has spent almost his entire life in either an industrial school or at Arlington House.
