Based on Naxim Gorky’s sprawling novel and set during the 1905 revolution, Mother is not an overtly political film.It gives an epic sense of the power of that revolution through the emotions of the participants, and sweeps one along by its fervour and a brilliant technique. Vera Baranovskaya plays the mother who is tricked by police into betraying her son ( nikolai batalov). Pudovkin himself plays the officer who interrogates her.
