LIGHTS OUT! MASTER AND COMMANDER

Director: PETER WEIR

LEADING UP TO OUR NATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN JULY, WE ARE HOLDING AN INDUSTRIAL LIGHT AND MAGIC DAY ON JUNE 25TH, IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRISH FILM BOARD/BSE.

Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), a Lucasfilm company, is responsible for the special effects in countless films, including Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Animator and special effects consultant Colum Slevin from Lucasfilm has Worked on Titan AE, Transformers and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World during his time at ILM. Colum started out as an animator in Sullivan Bluth in Dublin, working on films such as The Land Before Time, before moving to the US and ILM. Now Head of Talent at Lucasfilm, he spends part of his time talking to high school students about how science and maths are the very basis of the art of special effects. Our Lights Out! ILM Day starts with a screening of Master and Commander, the high seas adventure starring Russell Crowe as a brash British sea captain during the Napoleonic wars. Known to the crew as Lucky Jack, he pushes his men and the ship, British frigate HMS Surprise, to their limits as they chase a much more powerful French warship around the South American coast. After the film, Colum will talk to participants about the film and what he does at Lucasfilm, showing clips from this and a range of other films which have used ILM visual effects. This is a unique opportunity for young people to meet a film industry practitioner working in one of the most exciting and influential visual effects companies in the world. Age: 14 to 18 Price (including screening & lunch) €10 Places are limited and booking essential through IFI Education on (01) 6795744.
