Varda’s celebration of the centenary of cinema is filled with appearances by the leading lights of both European and American film. A wheelchair-bound man, ‘Mr. Cinema’, lives in a splendid chateau which is covered with cinema memorabilia. He hires a young film student to visit once a day for 101 days in order to structure his muddled recollections of an illustrious film career. The great Michel Piccoli plays the symbolic old man who has experienced all of cinema history at first hand. His stream of famous ‘guests’ include Gerard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Harrison Ford and Leonardo DiCaprio.
