La Regle du jeu

Director:

1939. Subtitles. Black and white. 110 mins.

Among the most famous flops of film history, Jean Renoir’s virtuoso masterwork is now regularly cited as one of the cinema’s ten greatest films. Still flying high on the success of La Grande Illusion and La Bête humaine, Renoir set up his own production company to make this ‘divertissement’ about a weekend shooting party that goes tragi-comically wrong. In the process he produced a devastating parable about European society dancing on the volcano of its own extinction.
