LA MOUSTACHE

Director: Emmanuel Carrere

1h 26min. 2005

One day, on a whim, Marc decides to shave off the moustache he’s worn for years. He waits to note his wife’s reaction, but neither she nor their friends so much as bat an eyelid. Not only that, when he finally does point it out (amused, but also slightly annoyed: his little joke, you see, has fallen flat), she tells him not to be so foolish: he never had a moustache. And with that apparently casual comment, the entire fabric of the universe seems to shift; and Marc comes to understand that he is living (or had, perhaps, been living until this moment) in a parallel reality. And his subsequent search for an explanation, which will take him halfway around the world to Hong Kong, only serves to amplify the terrors of the unknown. And like the best conspiracy thrillers, the film suggests the horrifying plausibility of the irrational: the sense that, not only are there forces out there beyond our control, but also our comprehension. Carrere has a fine story here, and he tells it superbly well. Cast includes: Vincent Lindon, Emmanuelle Devos, Mathieu Amalric.
