IRELAND ON SUNDAY: THE LOOKING GLASS

Director: Colin Downey

Ireland on Sunday is our monthly showcase for new Irish film.

We are delighted to welcome back prolific independent director Colin Downey with his first IFB-funded feature, a fairytale thriller, The Looking Glass. The film follows Paul, a troubled young man who lives in a rural cottage with his pregnant girlfriend Clare. While dealing with the sudden arrival of his sinister mother-in-law and coming to terms with his impending fatherhood, Paul constantly struggles to escape the traumas of his childhood. The story, which moves quickly from familiar drama to dark fairytale, weaves together magic, mystery and suspense, features another great performance from Patrick O’Donnell (who won the Best Actor award at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival for The Fading Light, which was shot by Colin Downey). One of few Irish directors working in the avant-garde arena, Downey’s films are consistently fresh, original and oddly unsettling.

Colin Downey will introduce the film and participate in a post-screening Q&A.
