INTERNATIONALVELVET

Director: BRYAN FORBES

U.S.A. • 1978 • COLOUR • 127 MIN

To cheer on the seven Irish equestrian athletes competing in the Summer Olympic Games, the Lights Out! film for this month is ‘International Velvet’.
Tatum O’Neal stars as American teen Sarah Brown in this sequel to the Elizabeth Taylor 1944 classic ‘National Velvet’. When her parents are killed in a car crash, Sarah is sent to England to live with her aunt, Velvet Brown (Nanette Newman). Like her aunt, Sarah is mad about horses and hopes to be an Olympic equestrienne. There are a few tense moments when the girl fails to measure up to her aunt’s exacting standards, but under the tutelage of a tough-as-nails trainer (Anthony Hopkins) and a headstrong horse called the Pie, Sarah proves herself every inch the horsewoman Velvet was. She also learns some valuable lessons about life as she competes for a spot on the Olympic three-day eventing team.
