Innocence

Director: Paul Cox

2000. Colour. Dolby stereo SR. 95 min.

This earlier film from Paul Cox, director of Human Touch, never received a proper release in Ireland. In what is unquestionably one of his most accessible and critically acclaimed works, Cox provides a wonderful and at times disturbing portrait of a passionate love affair between a couple in their late 60s. Claire and Andreas were lovers in Belgium soon after the war; now, 45 years later, they are reunited in Melbourne and resume a passionate sexual relationship, much to the dismay of their nearest and dearest. Fearless performances by Julia Blake and Charles Tingwell are matched by Cox’s committed direction and script. Cox has touched on similar themes in Lonely Hearts and A Woman’s Tale, among others, and Innocence makes a perfect companion piece to Human Touch.
