INGMAR BERGMAN: SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE Director: Ingmar Bergman 169 mins, Sweden, 1974, Digital, Subtitled Book cinema tickets Originally a six-part TV miniseries, Scenes from a Marriage was, in common with many later Bergman works, such as Face to Face and Fanny and Alexander, subsequently edited into a feature-length cinema version. Created in the era of second-wave feminism, amidst rising divorce rates, this piercing portrait of a disintegrating marriage, which takes a more direct approach to examining emotional and sexual relationships between professional middleclass people, struck a chord with many audiences. As Marianne and Johan, Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson have never been more tender, which makes their conflict all the more heartbreaking. Notes by David O’Mahony.
