INGMAR BERGMAN: PORT OF CALL

Director: Ingmar Bergman

98 mins, 1948, Sweden, Digital

Bergman charts the complex relationship between two outsiders in this assured early film; Port of Call, with its shades of Rossellini’s social realist ethos and location shooting, presages the existential explorations that would define his later works. Berit (Nine-Christine Jönsson), a young woman haunted by a troubled past, is released from a reformatory; she grapples with societal judgment, a strained relationship with her domineering mother, and her feelings of alienation. Berit’s unexpectedly falls for Gösta (Bengt Eklund), a sailor who offers her hope for a fresh start. As their relationship deepens, both characters confront their inner fears and the weight of their pasts.
