IN DREAMS (EVENING COURSE: SHADOW OF A GENIUS)

Director: NEIL JORDAN

100 minutes, U.S.A., 1999

We are delighted to welcome Neil Jordan who will take part in a post-screening discussion with participants of the Evening Course, facilitated by Dr. Harvey O’Brien (Lecturer in Film Studies at UCD).

Considering the various genres of film he has tackled, Neil Jordan’s nods to Hitchcock are many and are indicative of the development of a cinematic style within a huge awareness of American cinema and culture. From the opposition of what’s real and what’s false in High Spirits, to the subverted view of family in The Miracle; from the transgressive female of The End of the Affair to the paranormal and gothic elements of this film, we can see how one of Ireland’s foremost filmmakers has absorbed recognisable Hitchcockian tropes and reimagined them for his own narratives.

Dr. Harvey O Brien will consider Jordan’s body of work, with particular reference to this film, and look at how the director’s knowledge of the world of cinema has influenced his individual style.

This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course, Shadow of a Genius (February 5th – March 12th). Full course price: €60 (€55 concessions), including tea/coffee. Please book your place by calling Sharon Corrigan on 01 679 5744 or emailing scorrigan@irishfilm.ie (Individual tickets for films on this Course are not available.)
