IFI & JDIFF COLLABORATION: SELF MADE

Director: GILLIAN WEARING

83 minutes| U.K.| 2010| Colour

In collaboration with the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, the IFI is delighted to welcome Turner prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing to Dublin for a special screening of her debut feature film which will be followed by a public discussion with Caoimhin Mac Giolla Leith, Critic and Senior Lecturer at University College, Dublin.

‘If you were to play a part in a film, would you play yourself or would you play a fictional character?’ This was the unusual question posed by Turner prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing in a number of adverts placed in various different locations around London and Newcastle. From the hundreds of answers she received, Wearing selected seven people and Self Made is the fascinating result. It’s a truthful and sensitive look at the seven individual narratives which, despite being uniquely personal, combine beautifully to create a cathartic film about shared experiences.
