IFI FAMILY: TALES OF THE NIGHT

Director: MICHEL OCELOT

84 minutes, France, 2011, Animation/Fantasy, Showing in English

French animator Michel Ocelot is best known for Kirikou and the Sorceress. His 2D animations of silhouette drawings recall the work of Lotte Reiniger, and are much admired for their simplicity and beauty. In this film, he continues this style, and creates a story around two young actors in a Parisian studio who create costumes and stories for various roles they might play.

Between them they tell a number of fairy tales, all of which share elements of fantasy and magic. The stories all feature princesses and move from Africa to Tibet to Europe to Mexico. There’s a werewolf, a wicked sister, and a story about saving a village. None too long, all of the tales are beautiful to watch, with a pacing that is a refreshing change from the high-speed tempo of most contemporary animation.
