In partnership with the 2022 edition of the Classics Now festival, which invites audiences to discover contemporary artistic interpretation and reimagination of the literature, arts, and ideas of the classical civilisations of Greece and Rome, the IFI is pleased to present this screening of Akala’s Odyssey. John O’Rourke’s documentary follows British rapper, poet, and activist Akala as he travels through Greece exploring the origins of Homer’s epic poem. Exploring the role of language in national identity, the enduring legacy and impact of Homer’s work, and drawing parallels between ancient and contemporary oral cultures and their continued role in the dissemination of poetry, this is a fascinating and multi-faceted approach to its subject that brings it to vivid life.
