As might be expected, it’s a mixed bag, with contributions varying in scale from Wolfgang Becker’s elaborately staged allegory of the country as a dying hospital patient to Isabelle Stever’s no-frills portrait of a primary school classroom discussion. Some directors use the ‘state of the nation’ remit as an opportunity for satire, most notably Dani Levy in Joshua. Others make political statements, while some turn in decidedly odd contributions, the best of which is Christoph Hochhausler’s haunting science fiction fable Seance.
