We like to think that it gets easier for each generation. And while every young queer person experiences things in different ways, many of us were lucky to do it without the glare of the smartphone camera. For Nora this is just part of being a teenager: the girls who should know better and the boys who definitely don’t. It’s summer in Berlin, and Nora walks a tightrope of pretend confidence and abundant naivety. She bounces from party to rooftop, school to the pool, watching life go by. Then she meets Romy and everything begins to change.

An honest and welcome film from Germany about the realities of growing up queer, that has way more authenticity than the usual fare. Cocoon is a universal coming-of-age story with a particular bent. All first kisses and summer days, Nora and Romy’s romance presents a familiar world to which we all long to get back.

Presented in partnership with Goethe-Institut Irland.
