FROM THE VAULTS: THIS OTHER EDEN Director: Muriel Box 80 mins, Ireland, 1959, Digital, Black & White. F-Rated. Book cinema tickets The first Irish feature film to be directed by a woman, This Other Eden is a caustic comedy set in 1945 when the erection of a monument unsettles a small town. The film explores the effects and complicated memorialisation of Ireland’s War of Independence (1918–1921). With a fine supporting cast of Abbey Players and a star turn from Leslie Philips, Audrey Dalton, Milo O’Shea and Hilton Edwards, This Other Eden is not just a critique of the past but a witty commentary on an emergent modern Ireland. The film has been digitally remastered by the IFI Irish Film Archive in collaboration with the BFI under an initiative of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) with the support of the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Screening Saturday December 17th at 15.30. Tickets for this screening are free-of-charge, and can be collected from IFI Box Office in person or by phone on 01 679 3477.
