FROM THE VAULTS: INNISFREE

Director: jOSÉ LUIS GUERíN

110 mins, Spain, 1990, Digital, English and Irish (with English subtitles)

This film screened on Thursday 8th October 2015.

José Luis Guerín is one of Europe’s most innovative and influential non-fiction filmmakers. His work boldly intermingles documentary and fiction and pays homage to a wealth of cinematic traditions. In 1989 Guerín travelled to Ireland in search of John Ford’s mystical Innisfree, looking for traces of The Quiet Man in a much-changed rural Ireland. Innisfree explores the difference between then and now; between memory and reality; and between classical narrative cinema and observational documentary. (Notes by Sunniva O’Flynn)

Screening in Ireland for the first time in over 20 years, Guerín’s film in turn assumes the mantle of historical artefact and infuses 1980s Irish country life with layers of memory and nostalgia.

Presented in collaboration with the Cervantes Institut for ISLA (Irish Spanish Latin American Literary Festival).
