THE FILM

Shot entirely on a sound stage in France but set in Saigon in the decades before the outbreak of the Vietnam War, The Scent of Green Papaya won the prestigious Caméra d’Or prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film the same year. The story is told through the eyes of Mùi, a servant who sets about her tasks with delicacy and grace, including the preparation of the unripe papaya.
