FEAST YOUR EYES: MY DINNER WITH ANDRE

Director: Louis Malle

110 minutes, U.S.A., 1981, Colour, DVD

Set predominantly in a swanky New York restaurant, but filmed in the abandoned dining rooms at the legendary Jefferson Hotel, My Dinner with Andre consists mainly of an erudite, meaningful conversation between two old friends over dinner.

Written by and starring Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn as characters based at least in part on versions of themselves, the film explores ideas about humanity, modern civilization and performance drawing in particular on some of Gregory’s astonishing experiences since giving up his career in theatre.

At once engaging, humorous and, in some places, quite mad, this unique film is a reminder of the immeasurable value of something as simple as sharing a meal. (Notes by Alice Butler.)

The screening will be followed by a meal inspired by the film in the IFI Café Bar. Tickets €20.
